FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK America’s Turn to TravelThis year may be one of the best to travel overseas. For starters, the U.S. dollar has risen against many world currencies, an international vacation can cost ten to twenty percent less than last year, and foreign destinations are wooing Americans with great deals. Economically, tourism is an important stimulus, pumping $1.6 trillion into our economy. Americans traveling internationally support not only U.S. workers, but economies abroad, some of which depend on tourism. Also, this year more Americans than ever have the ability to travel overseas, since Homeland Security rules now require passport documents for reentry into the U.S. from Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. Holding a passport opens up an entire world of travel beyond our immediate neighbors. Making it even easier, 27 countries no longer require visas for Americans. Lastly, President Obama’s recent meetings with international leaders have helped transform our world image. There is a new spirit of enthusiasm toward the U.S. and its people. Now it’s our turn to follow the president’s lead and travel as individual ambassadors of American good will.
