A Guide to Rugged Roads
by Julie Halpert
September 9, 2013

Deb Gaillard, age 65, is listing some of the activities on her recent vacations: buliding an igloo in Romania, watching the sun rise over the Himalayas and canoeing on the Budhi Gandaki River in Nepal, complete with crocodiles.

"I hope to take these trips as long as I can," says Ms. Gaillard, who lives in Jackson, GA.

So-called adventure travel is more popular than ever among the 50-plus crowd. A study last year by the U.S. Tour Operators Association - which serves six million travelers, most of whom are baby boomers - found that trips like those favored by Ms. Gaillard ranked first in all "experiential" travel categories.

This growing appetite is prompting "many of our members to build programs especially for boomers wanting adventure," says Terry Dale, the group's president and CEO.
